The city of Minnetonka is located just eight miles west of Minneapolis with quick access to I-394 and I-494 making it within easy driving distance to downtown Minneapolis. The city prides itself on its reputation for preserving its natural resources including 42 community parks, more than 1000 acres of open space as well as over 40 miles of multi-use trails. Even though the city shares its name with the well-known Lake Minnetonka, the city contains only one small bay of the lake—Gray’s Bay, which forms the headwaters of Minnehaha Creek. Minnetonka real estate remains a popular choice for home buyers because of recreational opportunities and the natural beauty of the area.

Minnetonka has evolved from a heavily wooded wilderness to milling along Minnehaha Creek to a thriving city today. The Charles H. Burwell house located along Minnehaha Creek and close to previous location of the Minnetonka Mills Company and is now operated by the Minnesota Historical Society.
Minnetonka is the home of many major corporate headquarters including Carlson Companies and Cargill, Inc. as well as a host of other thriving companies. Ridgedale Mall offers great shopping as well as many smaller malls and centers throughout the city. The southeast area is home to the Opus Center, a large mixed-use development of office, light industrial, residential and hotel areas. The Glen Lake neighborhood is named for the large lake located near Excelsior Boulevard and Eden Prairie Road. Street cars running along Excelsior Boulevard were used for commuters, farmers taking their goods to Minneapolis and those who worked at the Glen Lake Sanitarium. The sanitarium was one of the 3 leading tuberculosis treatment centers in the world. In the 1990’s the facility was closed, the buildings were demolished and the Glen Lake Golf and Practice Center, a public nine-hole golf course, was opened. The Glen Lake area is the home of the Gold Nugget local tavern and grille.
Minnetonka is covered by three school districts: Minnetonka, Hopkins and Wayzata. The Minnetonka School District also includes the cities of Deephaven, Shorewood, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Greenwood, Tonka Bay, Victoria, Chanhassen and Woodland. There are six elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. There are also five private and parochial schools. Minnetonka real estate values are bolstered by the quality school systems.

Minnetonka real estate boasts homes that are a little older, but larger than some of the neighboring communities. The lots are also usually slightly larger and more wooded. There are limited areas of new development, but Portico, which located in both Minnetonka and Wayzata, offers some beautiful homes with a variety of styles and upper end amenities.
